I always wondered about this ever since I had my 400 rebuilt. When I first start her up she's got about 80 lbs of pressure until it warms up and then at idle it's around 20 lbs or so.
Glad to hear that it's pretty much normal. Thanks for the information.

For the blow-by: Make sure the PCV is working, and you might want a catch-can on the PCV line as well.

You can also experiment to find a different PCV which is less restrictive. They vary a lot. I had an 85 Crown Vic(351W P71 model) with lots of blow by, big mess in the air cleaner often. I found a PCV which was better, but it still pushed oil out. I then cheated, I rerouted the PCV system with the PCV on the outer end, full vacuum to one valve cover. That stopped the mess in the air cleaner, and it used about a quart of oil per month(which was only a little more than before that). I don't suggest that unless it's really bad and you are prepared to watch the oil/dipstick often.

and you're using an appropriate vintage / hot rod type oil that has sufficient zinc/phosphorus content for flat tappet cams? drain, filter, fill with Rotella 15-40 and see what happens i'd set up a catch can in the pcv line from the valve cover to the intake manifold, and disconnect the tube from the air filter housing. you can either find a breather that fits into the tube or find a breather that fits into the valve cover, or set up a catch can for that line as well time for an overhaul

They make Rotella 10W30 too. In northern areas, that might be a better choice than 15W40. The Rotella 10W30 is a bit thicker than a standard 10W30 if you look at the CST at 100 degrees C. FWIW, I have run Rotella 10W30 for years on my flat tappet engines, and never had an issue.

What choices are there for oil additives for old cam engines? I'd prefer using modern oils and an additive, I like Amsoil the most. They do make special oils for older engines, but I also like choices that don't require special ordering. I just received an order in two days through the Amsoil site, a case of Severe gear oil. So it isn't really slow, but it isn't as convenient or fast like going to any local store etc.

If I'm reading your post right, you bought the car 18 years ago and only put 5,000 miles on it, the 40+ year old car has only 37,000 miles total. Cars that mostly sit tend to use more oil/have more blow-by than cars that get used regularly. Rings don't seat well, seals tend to get dried out.
