This should have been a simple job to swap out my Torino's thermostat.  Pulled off the housing to discover there was no thermostat installed.  I had purchased a new one from a parts supplier supposedly for the 390.

The new one is too small to sit in the housing.  It's diameter is 2 1/8".  The housing's flange is 2 5/8".  I thought the supplier had given me the wrong thermostat so checked with another supplier.  They showed me one from their system and it's too small as well.  I don't know if my 390 has the wrong housing installed.  I looked through various thermostats on the Rock Auto site for reference and they all appear to be the smaller diameter regardless of engine size.

Can anyone provide any information on what thermostats might fit?  I plan to use a 192-195* thermostat.

hmm i don't recall the FE's using a different thermostat... only unique one i know of is the cleveland

The thermostat I bought was NAPA PM192-4425 PM192-4425 | NAPA Auto Parts (napaonline.com)

The other parts supplier gave me one identical to the NAPA 'stat.  I did learn today that the 1965 Galaxie 390 used a larger thermostat at 2.49".   The NAPA store I was in today had one in stock and although better, it still didn't fit the flange of the housing I have securely.  It would probably work but it would be nice to find a thermostat that actually fit my housing.   The flange I have is 2.57" in diameter.  

My Torino is a '68.

There were two size thermostats, the larger one used on the earlier intake.  I guess your car has the early style intake which isn't original to it which is why it has the larger Thermostat.  Go on RockAuto and you can see the part numbers for the the older larger vs the newer smaller.  It seems the cutoff was around 1966.

The intake I have appears to be correct for 1968.  ID is C8AE which IIRC does indicate 1968.

The housing itself appears to be the issue.  I’m going to look for a new housing for this engine and go with the 2 1/8” thermostat.

For reference, the intake outlet is 1.85” dia and the housing inlet is 2.00” dia.  I’m no engineer but I’d think the two should be similar in diameter.
