does your car have factory gauges or lights?  here is a link that should help.  http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&actionSrc=Form&langId=-1&searchTerm=oil+sender&vehicleIdSearch=472023&searchedFrom=header" rel="nofollow - http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&actionSrc=Form&langId=-1&searchTerm=oil+sender&vehicleIdSearch=472023&searchedFrom=header   these sending units are for my 74 ranchero with a 460. but ford used the same units for the 302/351c/351W/351M/400M/429/460.

If your car has factory gauges you will need the sender extension, sometimes called a "log". the standard gauge package does not use this. the log is use to as an extention to provide clearance for the oil gauge sending unit. you probably have the correct sender.

yup, John (75GranMan) is correct.
The sending unit is too big to be screwed into the block it needs the "LOG"

This is the "log" you need! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-1973-FORD-MUSTANG-289-302-351W-ZINC-OIL-PRESSURE-FITTING-/370961687444?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item565f0a2394&vxp=mtr#ht_783wt_880" rel="nofollow - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-1973-FORD-MUSTANG-289-302-351W-ZINC-OIL-PRESSURE-FITTING-/370961687444?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item565f0a2394&vxp=mtr#ht_783wt_880

I will look up that log. I have gauges and my org one screwed right into the block. New ones no clearance.Went to aftermarket but want the org.to work.

MUSTANG PARTS PLACES HAVE THAT LOG.  Idiot light sender doesnt require it but with an actual gauge 289/302/351W USED IT. 351C/M, 400, FE series and 429/460 DID NOT.  You need the log to space your sending unit out so it will fit.

It seems that the log has an ofset hole.I had tried just a pipe 3in and still had no clearance. Will purchase the log, expensive $24. but what the hell I have two sending units already.

i think i used a 4in piece of pipe and a 45 degree elbow, for mine, just didn't feel like hunting the wrecking yard for one.
