Hello I am a first time 72 Montego GT owner, I have owned a 72 GTS Sport F/B Q-code four speed. I also have two 71 Ranchero's both special value package cars or white sale as some have called them. Both are M-code Auto with Shaker hoods. Getting back to the Montego I found it in a junk yard a few months ago complete, it is a Q-code auto on the column. With a rare Ram Air system on it( couldn't believe it was still there. It sat in that yard for almost ten years.) it also has p/s, p/b, a/c, and and an R code 3.25 Traction lok. It is is code 3H dark metallic blue with a black bench seat interior. It is still on a title from 1972 so technically I will be second owner. I have a Marti for it showing it to be one of 16 with paint and trim codes. And one of 846 with engine and trans. It is rusty in the quarters and a few spots in the floor but very minor. It still has all the original trim rings and hub caps, and a Good Year Polyglas GT G70-14 tire for a spare. It was last registered in 1992 with 86XXX miles now reads 87XXX miles so I believe with the condition of the engine and interior it is original miles. Thanks in advance and I hope to learn more about my car and buy some much needed parts for it.

There were 29 sportsroof cyclone montego GT's and one 1972 montego mx produced with this option. There also could have possibly been a few extra ram air plenums and ram air air cleaners built as spare replacement parts. There are three known survivor 1972 montego GT ram air cyclones that have been found, all of them are 429 cars.

I have seen his Marti report, no mention of being a Cyclone. No mention of the Ram Air set up either He bought it out of the junkyard where the original owner put it. If this isn't a Cyclone (not sure how to tell and it came from the Factory with that Ram Air... RARE! AND it is Blue on Blue not the typical GREEN! I am beyond drooling over this car!

A Cyclone would probably have the "ram air" hood decals and the "CYCLONE" side decals.

There are other ways that you can prove if it is an original cyclone or not. The cyclone option included all of the options listed below.Includes functional dual hood scoop (Ram Air); Traction-Loc Rear axle; with F70 x 14 WSW Tires (with 351CJ) or G70 x 14 WSW Tires (with 429 4V); hubcaps and wheel trim rings; 4 speed manual Transmission (came with the 351CJ only) or automatic transmission; body striping and identification; dual racing mirrors; and rim-blow 3-spoke steering wheel. Available only on 2-door models. The cyclone option was not available on the Montego MX Brougham. Mention of the cyclone option was dropped from the second printing of the 1972 mercury dealer literature, so it may have been offered only part of the year.
Only 29 GTs (9 with the 351CJ & 20 with the 429) and 1 MX 2-door (351CJ) were built with this option. All of the 30 1972 Cyclones that were known to have been built, were equipped with automatic transmissions. The cyclone option package was kind of expensive in 1972, resulting in very few being ordered. The package for the Q-code 351 4V (4 spd or C6) was $518.10 and for the N-code 429 (C6 Transmission only) was $616.60. That was a lot of money in 1972.There is another picture below of the "Ram Air" option.

Thanks for posting the pics! It has the 3.25 traction lok I do not believe it to be a cyclone but I sure was hoping... It is blue on black by the way. It is also still wearing 1973 Utah plates. And I did take off the bug shield first thing. LOL it also came with the Good Year G70X14 tires trim rings and hubcaps.

The original 1972 cyclones will have a very early/low production number in the vin number (the production number is the last six digits of the vin number). In the case of the car below the late/high 543711 production number had unfortunately proved that the car was built too late in the year, to be an original cyclone. An original cyclone will have an earlier/lower production number than this. The ram air system might have possibly been added as an option at a mercury dealership after the car had left the ford factory. It is a very nice restoration though.

Tom, if your VIN is even higher then I would go on the assumption that this was not an original Ram Air car. From all we have seen and heard the FACTORY ram air stuff was early production on both the Montego and the Gran Torinos. It could be a dealer add-on so the original owner bought it as a "ram air car" Either way, The Ram Air setup you have is pretty damn rare and the car is absolutely worth a nice restoration! Yes like I said before I was hoping, but still very excited to find a rare piece of Mercury history. I am hoping to find the original owner or his family as I said I have the original title. The owner lived in Ogden where I found the car, which is only 35 miles from here, so with help from a friend in law enforcement hopefully I can track someone down. Also I was fortunate to find the center grille emblem in the car. I've read that is hard to find.
