I recently bought a Chicago electric 90A Flux core welder that came with a hobart hood, gloves. Also an esatman sandblaster with hood all for $75. Couldn't pass it up. I tried out he welder last night at the school and seems to work pretty good outside of a lot of spatter. I was told to expect alot of spatter out of flux core but is there a wire that may spatter less? I have a small hole to patch up in the front of the floor pan. I', running harbor feights .030 wire through it now. Any suggestions? ------------- ZC 2016 F-150 xl 2.7 liter 73 Gran Torino Formal roof, Ten damn years, and its almost there. |

Get rid of the HF wire and get some good Lincoln or other name brand. Not much else you can do about the spatter though. That is the main issue with any flux core wire. You can buy anti splatter stuff to help remove it easier, I haven't gotten that far yet. I've got the same welder, didn't get quite the deal you did but it was cheaper than at HF new and came with an auto darkening helmet. I just got a small welding table this week and need to give the welder a good workout. Russ |

yes, flux core does that  but something else to keep in mind, is flux core can draw moisture out of the air and weld poorly just like flux coated stick rods will! so i suggest when you aren't using it for a while store the wire somewhere warm and dry as you would with stick rods if you use them. i have an old insulated camper "icebox" with a lamp socket and a low wattage light bulb inside to keep my rods dry  (don't laugh it works!!!)

Also drop wire size and tip. If your at .030 drop to .027/.025 you can get good wire and tips at most hard wear stores. I have a craftsman 110 volt that I use and as long as you weld slow and hot it works great the splatter does come off easy. I am going to pit the gas reg on mine here soon. ------------- AJ McKenna |

yep, 75% argon/25% CO2 and .023 wire...you'll think you "died and gone to heaven" so to speak!

I'm looking into getting a welder now as well. Only experience I have is with an arc welder, and it's limited. Eventually I want to do all the metal work on my car. Is it possible with just wire feed, or do I need to use gas as well? ------------- 1973 Gran Torino Sport |

| I don't think they sell flux core in .023. I have a MIG 135 from Eastwood and that thing would slpatter like no other at first, I then bought some Lincoln wire and played with it enough to find the sweet spot. I do rarely see any splatter, welds are healthy and clean, not as nice as the big Miller we have at work but I put that on the wire/gas. For flux wire, I think it is hard to do any better now, I tried a couple other welders and results are the same. On a side note, going flux wire with a bottle of argon makes it a lot more forgiving on the welder setting. |

For the past thirty years or so, I have also used a flux core 110 welder that is not convertible.
