I asked this question before without success.... Does anyone know why my 1968 torino gt 390 fastback came with a dual vacuum heater control valve? I have only found online a handful of these cars and only one other in person. Was this factory air...or dealer hung on air? It seems like its quite a unique part so I am glad I was able to buy the only other one I have found. Any help on what this is would be appreciated. I might even be willing to part with it should someone with a need and would return it to a car---would want it.

It looks like it not just dual diaphragm, it sends the hot water two different ways...
Where do the hoses go?
Dual heaters like in a passenger van or stretch Limo?

The heater cores on the 68-69s (possibly 70-71s?) with factory AC have 3 ports. I believe the valve reduces the amount of hot coolant flowing in the core when AC is on. The valve pictured above was used on 68's, for 69's (or maybe mid year 68 ) they switched to a different style valve, but still 3 ports. I found a NOS aftermarket valve on e pay when I changed my core a few years back.

Why wouldn't they just shut the coolant flow off when not in use like all the other cars Ford made?

Not sure why that is, some brilliant Ford engineer had something in mind. The non AC cars just have 2 ports on the core like most all other cars.

i had a 3 hose heater core in my 68 Montego, i know one thing if you use the right/wrong 2 hoses you'll get no heat.

it just bypasses the core in the side tank that has the 2 connections.

the system may be designed to prevent A/C evaporator freeze up by running only a partial heater core flow path when the A/C is on?

So question for the group, mine rusted and busted. Any suggestions for replacement. I've seen originals on ebay for over $225, any other versions of the heater control valve for less and newer?

thanks!

I cut in a pair of pex ball valves and took the handles off. If you just need to stop the hot flow to the core you only need one. A leak will need two.

Could you take a picture of your set up so i can see how to possibly replicate?

thanks!
