I have a 78 LTDII sports touring package. What was the original undercarriage color on these cars? Mine looks like it *might* have been body color? Too rusty to tell now, but the entire firewall is body color and I don't see anywhere it transitions to a black.

On my '72, the frame was black and the firewall and floor boards are body colour (although mine was undercoated when new, so it all looks black but if you scrape off the undercoat it's red).  Firewall can be black or body colour.  It depends on where it was made.

I like the body color being used for the unseen areas. But OEM didn't spray much on those parts like underneath etc, later models didn't get clear on them or very very little.

I learned reconstructing my 99 Explorer that it looks very good with a satin finish on those. I made it glossy on the radiator support and along the engine bay perimeter. But underneath it ended up satin(too cold the night after painting). More paint is better, so don't make it too thin like OEM. Give it a good coat whether you make it gloss, satin, or a flat finish.
