Welcome Mark. The mid 80's 460's were among the least efficient big blocks, the heads and intakes were relatively small. So figure plenty of low end torque, but not very impressive power numbers up higher.

The Cleveland has great heads possible more than the 460, depending on good fortune finding the better heads and intakes. Prices on everything have gone way up, so now it's very hard to make statements that are completely accurate regarding price. Feasible isn't what it used to be, SBF heads used to be $1200 or so new, about 10 years ago. Now $2000 to $2600 seems to be the new normal for Windsor SBF heads.

So search long and hard, patiently decide. Many here can help a lot with good advice, but pricing will be all new for most things.

The Windsors have tons of available parts, for a 302 or 351 based engine. The sky is the limit, your budget that is, so work out what you are most comfortable with, parts you may have now etc.

351C and 460 engine mounts are different, the correct mounts for each engine is what sets the location. aftermarket 460 mounts exist but do not locate the engine in the factory location and all sorts of problems arise. but before you get to the very hard to find 460 mounts, the bellhousing bolt pattern of the 2 engines in question is also different, they use different bellhousings / transmission cases. adapters are available but last time i looked they were around $1k for a set-up. the Windsor engine family uses the same engine mounts and transmission bellhousing bolt patterns as the 351C. if you're interested i can put you in contact with a guy in Flower Mound TX that deals in 351C parts

If you are interested in a nice built 351W I have one on a stand that I had in my car before I restored it and ended up using a 351C from my donor car instead of the Windsor.  The Windsor is a great motor- it was rebuilt about 5 years ago with RHS heads, 4V intake and roller cam.  I also have headers for it that worked with the C6 (I know, right?).  It had about 1000 miles on it when we pulled it.  I turn it over regularly.  Let me know if you are interested.  I’m in Houston.

Welcome!  You've been upgraded to a new member so you have full forum privileges.  Rockatansky covered off the swap issues pretty extensively.  The aftermarket big block mounts are made by Crites and they require the use of their headers.

Otherwise, you have to find the factory items, from a factory big block car.  You can also check 1972-1979 Lincoln Mark IV/Vs and 1972-76 Thunderbirds for big block donor parts.

It would be easier to stay with a Cleveland or a Windsor as there will be no issues with mounts or the transmission.  Why not build the Cleveland in the car?  Clevelands are getting far less common and it is the original engine to the car.

If you do trans work, than I'd say it'd be natural to swap a 4R70W in then. They fit the space and are common to find and build. The wiring and controller are a good $700+, but other than that it's basic items like drive shaft, mounts and the torque converter choice. That would also give you more choices for rear gears. The 1st gear 2.84:1 lets you choose a little less rear gear, but end up with a taller high gear still.
