I have a 69 torino gt, someone put a 4 speed from a 72 torino into it. I either need to know if they came factory with a hurst 4 speed shifter or if someone has a shifter for sale. I'm missing my reverse switch and can't find one. If someone has any information it would help

Welcome!. Yes, the '72 Torinos came with a Hurst shifter from the factory. You could post a want ad in the classified section.

This website has a ton of good info on Top Loaders:

there were 2 different styles of Hurst shifters available from the factory, a 'Ford / Hurst' (Hurst licensed / produced by Ford?) shifter that IIRC has a round chrome shifter arm, uses poly bushings similar to what an automatic linkage uses that snap / press into the shifter and the linkage rods either snap into the poly bushings and/or are retained by a spring clip. i'm not 100% because my shifter & linkage have been through the wringer before i got it. my linkage arms are drilled for cotter pins or spring clips but i don't know if that was done after the fact-ory?

the other shifter is an actual Hurst aftermarket (Competition Plus?) made by Hurst shifter that has a rectangular chrome shifter arm, uses aftermarket Hurst style bushings at the linkage arm to shifter connection. as i recall the linkage rods are not the same for both shifters

what might mess you up, or not is the shifter mount bracket location on the tail housing. from what i've gathered the tail housing can be drilled for a forward or rearward bracket position, and there are like umpteen billion different shifter mount brackets for all the various years, cars, transmissions and shifters. let's see what i can dig up for pics

somewhere along the line my 72 Sportsroof acquired an extra genuine Hurst shifter arm, these are the Ford style linkage rods, the Hurst rods are threaded for adjustments

here's my tail housing, forward shifter mount bolt pattern is used, you can see the unused rearward casting boss behind the bracket. the David Kee page has great pics of all the tail housings

and a pic by the Late Great Dan Wessman of his complete assy

Is that the compition hurst or the ford hurst shifter? Mine doesn't have a bracket on it

I believe that is the ford/hurst shifter.

Okay so the picture you posted is the ford one right? I've been looking for a while. Do anyone know where I can get the linkages because mine are toasted

the Ford linkage rods are VERY hard to find, Good Luck!

the Hurst Installation Kit is still available (for now) but i can't say the Hurst rods will work with the Ford shifter, you may have to buy a Hurst shifter also?

from what i can find the back up light switch itself is Motorcraft SW-943
