| I need to replace my carburetor in my 73 GTSS. It is a Q code with a 351 4 v. Any suggestions would be helpful and where to get it would also help. |

original carb? what leads you to the diagnosis that the carb needs to replaced rather than rebuilt? have you investigated the stack of gaskets and EGR plate all the way down to the cast iron of the intake manifold carb flange? what distributor / ignition system, stock points? when's the last time they were serviced and set to spec with a dwell meter?

what about the distributor? reason i ask is because if i had a nickel for every time a carb got changed instead of a set of points .... i'd be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$  ------------- 72 GT Ute |

Once you can obtain the kit, these aren't very complex devices. Yes, quite a few little balls and clips, but lots of pictures (to remember how linkage goes) and a clean work surface you can do this if you have patience and know which way to turn a screwdriver. I think the hardest part of rebuilding a carb (assuming the throttle shaft bushing aren't all worn out) is the tuning once back on the car. As mentioned though, make sure your ignition is all square before deciding its the carb. Don't forget to check the advance on the distributer. Good luck! Are you still running a stock 4300D? These can be a really difficult carb and I have never seriously messed with one. Maybe someone else on here can speak to rebuild or tuning one better than I can. If the ignition is all good and you want to replace the carb, an Edelbrock AVS2 is a good choice. I run a QFT Hot Rod 680 VS and I am happy with it. The Brawler carbs seem to be well liked too. | Yes I have the 4300d. I know what’s going on the bowl is not holding the gas and I have to crank and crank on it 5-6 times after it sits a few days. I appreciate your advice |

I have a 4300 auto totally restored. Not just rebuilt. while i agree with Vince that an Edelbrock carb would be a good choice in this situation, your description of what's bugging you about your old carb is an extremely common complaint of the Edelbrock Performer carbs. in case you're not aware, your 4300-D carb has a very unique base gasket pattern. there are literally no other carbs that fit the intake w/o an adapter plate, and there is only 1 adapter plate that is correct. Trans-Dapt 2199 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-2199?srsltid=AfmBOoobQpuKtY65z8PBdf5JaWyw3RPdpl_cDXvfSi4DgjPcEffQCtdV" rel="nofollow - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-2199?srsltid=AfmBOoobQpuKtY65z8PBdf5JaWyw3RPdpl_cDXvfSi4DgjPcEffQCtdV yeah the price hasn't gone down but it's worth it if you need it. on the other hand you might find a used Edelbrock Performer manifold for the same $ or not much more. changing the intake (if it gets done correctly) will eliminate the possibility of a failed intake gasket that would not otherwise be solved by only changing the carb also consider that changing to a different make / style carb and/or intake manifold brings with it several issues to address such as throttle linkage, kick down linkage if auto transmission, fuel line routing, vacuum hose alterations, choke plumbing / wiring, possibly the air filter housing will not fit just a carb, right?
