Have you thought about cutting down a push/pull choke cable? They can be had for under $20. I saw the ad on eBay and it shows has the knob with VENT on it. The one on mine is plain looking with no VENT text (see below). I doubt mine was changed as it had sat almost 30yrs before I got it and was never messed with.
