I have a  70 torino w/ 8 inch rear and want to put in 9 inch. Will I need a different driveshaft or does anyone know if it was the same length between the two rear ends?

i never heard of a 8 inch removable carrier rear end in a torino.i thought they either came in a 9 inch 28 spline or 31 spline

not sure on the shaft length

@red396, yes the 302 cars had 8in rears and look almost identical to a 9in but you ave a wider choice of gear ratio's with aftermarket gears with the 9in.

here is an 8in

here is an 8in in a 73 Gran Torino formal that had a 302

iS THAT WHY i CAN'T FIND ANY LOWER NO THAN 355 FOR AN 8IN ON THE WEB.
I would like something like 3.25 for my pinto

ya gears are hard to get for the 8in that is why alot of people swap a 9in in place as the gear selection is endless, well almost but probably 3 times more then 8's

measure from the end of your trans tail shaft to the pinion yolk before you swap out the rear axle. Measure the same length after the swap. The shaft it self would work for either rear. You may need a new u joint at the worst. If the length is different, depending on how much different would determine whether you need another shaft or not.

hay
when you go from a 8 to a 9 you will need a shorter drive shaft. you will need to find a car with the same trans to get the drive shaft from(with a 9).most ford with 302 had 8 rear ends.the rule of thumb is if its a 351 car it will have a 9. this is with the older stuff....torinojon

You can always have your shaft shortened too
