Found this a few years ago and it is the best explanation with some great real world testing.
 
It is by far NOT from the engineers who make the big bucks but it does help explain it in a way we can all understand.

Good read. These principal could be adapted to our cars, if we could find the different pressure zones.

I had to do a double take that this was written about a Dodge Shadow, but very good research.
