I had a micro disk surgery done in 1998 and relief was instant. Recovery took about 6 months BUT I was mobile right after the surgery. Just light duty stuff for 6 months. Good luck I know your pain! Get well soon

A quick update on my condition...

I'm now just under 3 weeks post surgery and the staples have been removed but still in the back brace for another 9 weeks. Getting a little more movement back in my right foot so that is encouraging! I've been working from home since mid-February and at the mercy of my wife to get me out and take me to my doctors appointments, but I feel like I'm in prison because it's the same routine day in and day out.... work on my office projects, eat, use the restroom, bathe, watch a bit of tv, sleep and repeat!

YEAH, I'm still kickin... though not quite as high as before!

Slowly getting back to normal. Went over to the dealership and worked on getting the sandblast cabinet cleaned up and ready for service again following the deluge a while back when the sprinkler system at the shop froze and busted. Got a D00E '70-'71 429 Cobra Jet intake manifold to get cleaned up for the (future) rebuild of the original 460 from my Torino. Boy is that mutha is HEAVY!!!

Felt good to do SOMETHING project related after all this time!

Yes, I am still alive! It has been months since my last update but I am slowly recovering from my recent back surgery in April and have started doing a few things to get the project back on track….

First light duty project I undertook was to clean up the sandblasting cabinet. The cabinet got flooded back when the sprinkler system froze and we just never got around to bringing it back on line. Dumped the old sand out and removed the LED lights so I could clean and remount them with Velcro to make them easier to service in the future.

With the cabinet reassembled, I pulled apart the cyclone dust separator and mini shop vac so they could be cleaned up as well. Got them cleaned, reassembled and remounted only to find the on/off switch of the shop vac was stuck in the on position, so I pulled the motor housing apart to access and remove the old switch. With the switch out, I tried blowing it out, tried toggling it to try and get it to click over to the off position, knocking it about to dislodge whatever might be keeping it from changing state but nothing worked so I bit the bullet and bought a new one. Tried it again a few hours later and the friggen thing started working!!! Angry

Another little project I worked on was to create a dash radio opening repair plate. While my dash in fully intact, I know there have been several guys who’s Torinos have had the dash hacked up to allow a modern DIN style radio to be installed. I drew it up on the computer then printed out and stapled it to a piece of cardboard (from a pizza box Wink) so I could cut it out and dry fit it to my dash to confirm it fit. I freehand trimmed it shape and dropped it onto my dash and it fit pretty well, so I’ll post the pattern for the repair plate onto the HOW-TO section for others to use as needed.

Sunday I went out to the garage to clean some stuff off the workbench and once I had most of the junk cleared away, I saw my Bernzomatic FirePoint torch kit on the shelf.

I bought this tourch and some alumiweld solder to play around with to see how I can attach my reshaped aluminum fuel tank burp tube to the OEM tube steel mounting bracket and then the burp tube assembly into my new fuel tank. Initial test was sticking a couple pieces of the aluminum tubing I used together and it did a fairly nice (and strong) job. Will also try attaching the tube to a thin piece of sheetmetal. Fingers crossed!

Well feels good to again be doing something project related and hope things begin to move forward again!!!

That's good to hear from you Joe, I hope the surgery has helped a lot.

I like that cover piece idea for the radio area, I was young and cut my dash below the radio hole, to add a cheap equalizer device. I will need to repair that too, the OEM surface texture looks really complicated.

I also have a wish to fit an AC control there left of the radio, the space on both sides are not great for any larger than small controls. The type I'd love to adapt is fairly large and wide, I don't believe it can go on either side(stuck with a smaller choice).

Well I have finally dipped my toes back into the water! The past couple weekends, been working on getting the sandblast cabinet back up and running and the final piece for it arrived on Friday, so I installed it on Saturday and did a bit of blasting. Shot a few pieces for my Liteningbolt project and started blasting the 429CJ intake manifold and the carb isolation cover. The cabinet performed like she always did but need to rotate the viewing window around to get the etched position over on the other side out of the normal viewing area and perhaps installing a brighter light to better illuminate the parts thru the sandstorm!

Next weekend hope to start repainting a few of the bits that need tidied up from setting in the "shop" of the "bodyman" who basically abandoned it until his wife sued him for divorce and I had to get it out of the garage. Have a couple local shops that said THEY could paint it like I wanted once I had it ready to go again, so fingers crossed come the first of the year, she'll be ready to roll out again!!

Well another obstacle to overcome....

Got a message from my buddy at the dealership on Thursday that they found they had a water leak in the new roof at one of the downspouts and it was leaking into our "clean room" where we store stuff that's almost ready to install. He said it was a pretty good leak so the first day of my Christmas vacation will be going thru my Torino parts and see what's still usable and what will need to be replaced.Censored

Pretty confident I should be OK, but will no more once I get over and start thru everything.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to having her ready to turn back over to a new shop if I could quit putting out little fires Ouch and focus on getting her ready again to roll out under her own power!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Damn Joe!  When it comes to body shops if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all.  Hopefully your parts all survived the water leak.  Too bad your are so far from CaliforniaJohnny, he'd do a great job on your car.

Let's hope 2025 brings you some good luck!

My build posts from the last year (when my back ordeal began) have been very unproductive. If you're like me, you're getting tired of seeing NO PROGRESS and are looking forward to some REAL PROGRESS on this build!
I was actually back over at the dealership Saturday morning looking at where things stood and planning out my next courses of action...
Noticed I have several pieces that I will need to reblast and reshoot and a few areas and pieces on the engine that I'll need to refinish as well. These should be easily accomplished in my current state but I see I have a few other tasks that will be a bit of a challenge to address.
While I haven't fully recovered, I did start PT for my balance problems this past week so praying my balance will recover to some degree that will allow me to stand and bend over for extended periods without bobbing and weaving around or falling on my face... kinda like a little kid with a 25 pound noggin!!!
Fingers crossed and wish me luck....Thumbs Up THANKS ALL

Best wishes for you Joe, I hope you recover a lot soon.

I have been sick since October with a sinus congestion, and this week I worked on my work truck all day before working the next. Now two days later I caught the new bug here, my supervisor had fever and nausea the day before me. I had vertigo for the 2nd time when I worked on my car all day, not I'm imbalanced a little, all of the time. Being sick from anything is awful, take care of yourself.

FINALLY, some progress to report on the Tomato... sort of! Thumbs Up

Removed the remaining hoses from the water pump and masked it off for blasting again. The Dupli-Color engine enamel didn't adhere correctly and is flaking off in spots, so I'll blast it and try again.

Originally I simply wiped it down with lacquer thinner, mounted it to the engine, shot the assembled engine with Dupli-Color engine primer before applying the Dupli-Color Ford Dark Blue. Did I miss a step someplace during the initial painting of the engine? Appreciate any tips on what I may have done wrong.... don't want to have to repaint the engine again down the road!!

I also started working on the door template for an LE style stripe. Looking at pictures of my original LE, it appears the upper edge of the stripe changes angle about the middle of the door.

A buddy of mine has two LEs he's working on that are still original paint and he's helping me to nail down the correct door shape on the factory stripes.

Next weekend I plan on blasting the water pump and any of the other engine and chassis brackets that need to be refreshed.

Keep going Joe, that's all tedious and time consuming work to overcome the details.

Engine paint is good but sometimes it doesn't survive as long as it should given the high heat and various chemicals flying around the engine bay. For the water pump, my biggest gripe has always been the gasket. All gaskets overhang the WP and are an ugly color contrasting with the engine color. Unless you plan to trim the gasket carefully, and paint it well after it's cured, that might always be an eyesore for a picky person.

My late model vehicles I accept as having lots of not so nice looking under hood things, they aren't pretty in any real way. The old Fords we like to have a lot of traditional look to them, which is not that hard to do, because the engine bays are fairly simple. But that does make them easier to detail given so fewer parts, and more space to adjust things if needed.

Try to keep it simple with just the level of special detail you like the best.

Your water pump looks like an aluminum unit. While much lighter and easier to install I have learned first hand that certain paint products don't stick to it very well. Give this a try it worked for me on my 460 pump. Scuff the pump with a 120 grit scotch brite pad or sand paper then clean with brake cleaner. Then skip the primer and paint directly to the aluminum pump. Mine has lasted over 15 years and no peeling.

Well a bit more Torino progress this past weekend. First up was breaking down my recently acquired remote oil cooler adapter for blasting and detailing......

I then worked a bit more on the LE door stripe template using dimension provided by a member who owns 2 factory LE's with original paint...

Not a lot to show, but progress is progress and I will be doing a bunch of sandblasting this coming weekend!

Nice work.
These small items; I post some of the smallest items, some of the most frivolous comments, and just some crap thats in my brain. I'm afraid I'll need that info someday, and its easier to find here, than for me to pour through photos and notes on my phone or PC. This forum forces me to be organized.

Besides these small updates may fill that one gap that you spend 3 hours trying to find a photo at the proper angle of what you need.

Keep the small posts coming!

Well this past weekend didn't get much accomplished because I got a late start waiting on the guy to come service our riding mower. I did go over to the dealership and hung a new mini shop vac on the sandblasting cabinet and took some pictures of the brackets I painted a couple weekends ago....

More baby steps.....

Nice work.
I personally really enjoyed doing all the little stuff for my car, more so than the big things. Seemed to provide a quick feeling of satisfaction. Trick was keeping it nice for when you used them to complete the bigger jobs. Bags, oversized boxes, thinly stacked shelves all to preserve the work done.

Well I think the cosmos is trying my patience because I made NO progress on the Torino...AGAIN!

First went to remove the POS sandblasting cabinet lens protector only to discover I had made a bone headed mistake and laid down two strips of double sided tape that had glued the lens to the cabinet too! 😡 While the protectors may have been junk, the tape adhered VERY WELL, so I postponed changing out the protector to the new style I received last week until I can find a windshield knife or some other tool to get the new lens out without busting it!

So next task on the agenda was to fill/burp my engine hoist jack to see if that would fix the rapid leak down of the cylinder when I was trying to use it. Filled it up with fresh oil (man I was surprised how much oil it took!), burped it and it seemed to be holding pressure like it should, so I pumped it up to about 3/4 of the travel and going to see if it leaks off any this week.🙏

Final task planned was to modify my chassis stand to also accept the core support so I can assemble everything to verify they all fit together nicely and come apart easily for any future repairs that may arise. Well there was supposed to be 2x4s in the old parts cage that I could utilize for the modification but the material was actually part of the old shelves/racks parts were once stored on. I wasn't in the mood to try and disassemble lumber that had been put together decades ago, so I put away my stuff and called it a day.🥴

Fingers crossed that next weekend will be a bit more productive!!!

Well it was a somewhat productive Saturday. Got the lense of the sandblast cabinet cleaned up and ready to get installed once the replacement window gasket arrives.
I replaced the lift cylinder on my engine hoist, lifed my core support assembly and set it on my chassis stand. I got it modified to mount the core support so I could get everything mounted onto it to verify it all mounted, cleared and was stable.
Had to get the unit up off the floor high enough for me to work on from my rollabout shop stool.

Want to get a couple lag bolts to mount it a bit more securely to the stand to insure it stays put while I wrestle stuff around getting everything mounted.

FINALLY moving forward again!!

A wee bit of progress the past couple weekends... got the core support lagged down and the stand turned to allow easy access to either side (forgot to take a picture), got the Fairlane 460 "Medusa style" headers sorted and marked...

and got the Torino 460 valve covers sandblasted.

This weekend, (here's the core support mounted to my chassis stand that I forgot to take a picture of last weekend)...

and started breaking it down to install the AC condenser/dryer to confirm everything will fit together like it should.

Got the condenser assembly set out but then spent the rest of the afternoon looking for the friggen brackets! Angry Have run across them countless times over the last few weeks and now when I'm ready for them, they've become the needle in the haystack!!
Always something any more.... Ouch

Hi Joe, those aren't horns in the 2nd picture are they? Please mount them out of the path of airflow to the radiator.
