Hi folks, I've been reading about different drum brake sizes on our cars and noticed some members say to check the size listed on the drum face. Unfortunately my car came with no drums. I did measure the backing plate and it measures to a hair over 11", logic would follow that I need the 11" shoes and drums to fit over the backing plate correct?

Thanks! Smile

Unless you have a wagon or a police car, they came with 10" drums.  The drums flare out so I am not sure the backing plate size, but they are probably larger than 11".  It is possible you no longer have original parts on your car.

Wagons are also 10 inches. The shoes are 2.5 inches wide instead of 2 inches.
1972 Gran Torino station wagon, light blue, 351C 2V, prior owner upgraded to 4V (2V heads), originally had a C4 but prior owner changed to C6 for some reason.

Right, my error.  It was the later wagons that had 11" brakes.

IIRC the lip / edge of the backing plates fit into a groove in the back side of the drums, the backing plates will measure larger than the braking surface of the drums
