Hi everyone,
I'm trying to remove the radio from my 71 Torino. Doesn't seem to have any cage fitted and moves around quite freely when I take the controls off. It's not pulling backwards out of it's fitting though. It looks like behind the knobs there are some kind of fittings designed to stop it pulling through the dash, is there some way of removing these, or is there a screw/fitting I've missed? Any help gratefully received...

check on the back and around the sides and bottom of the radio as it should have some kind of bracket to help support it...

Yeah, that's what I expected but nothing... it seems to be hanging in place just by the silver backing plates to the tuning/volume knobs...

i think you silver backing plates are nuts, you have to spin them out with long nose pliers using the notch bumps deep in the back. support the radio and they might come out with your fingers. there should've been a support brace holding the back of the radio up, you should make sure to use one on the new unit or are you using a cage style radio? old cars ...

If you look inside the opening where the posts come out it looks like the part that contacts the post at the base possibly turns on the post (if its threaded). It looks like there are four raised spots that run from the post to the outside of the opening, if you have a needle nose pliers that is long enough I would try to turn the inner part at those raised pieces and see if they turn out. Just a guess but I don't know what else would be holding it in if there is nothing on the back side.

nice one, thanks guys - I'll have another go in the morning and see if I can get those little fixings turning, thanks for all the advice. I dug out another old post on the forum from years ago which basically said the same thing so will see how I get on...

if you are trying to remove it as visible in this pic... then yes those inserts with the 4 notches are threaded onto the shafts and need to be unscrewed

Got it out in the end - needle nose pliers with just a tiny bit more pressure and a lot more patience than I had originally given it.
Thanks for all your help guys. Oh, and it's getting repaired, not replaced with some ugly digital repro version... just to put everyone's minds at ease...

i don't care if you used a modern radio, but it would be a shame to cut up that beautiful molded woodgrain dash!
do they even have AM radio stations in the UK????? ![]() |

Yeah, they still broadcast... though until I get this radio fixed I've not idea what plays on them!
Definitely not cutting up that dash... too many crimes against interiors were committed in the 90s fitting big ugly stereos to old cars...

Haha, pretty well hidden there - not a crime, more a minor offence...

I remember cutting myself getting the factory radio out of my first gts. It was a major pita but eventually I got the new Sparkomatic 8-Track in there.

It should be right next to the post options on the top right part of the post box. It still shows up on mine. |

I don't have it on my phone. Will try the laptop I guess. Haven't used it since my failed Arizona trip.
