Okay fella's here's a question that's crossed all our minds...

Your engine compartment.

Have you "spray bombed" it to be decent?
What have you done to make it show worthy?
Do you keep your hood closed at the shows?

Reason why I ask is I have a line on a orig 88,000 mi Montego with a standard 40 yr old engine compartment. Dirty, grungy...Has a 351M 2bbl with ice cold air, perfect interior, no rust.....thinking of buying it for my Cyclone Sportster project.

What I thought was taking out that engine with the nice rebuilt high hp 302's you see on e-bay to be show worthy....What other choice do I have? You got pics of your spray bomb effort? Suggestions for detailing the compartment without pulling that engine? Keep the hood down until further??

Let's hear it boy's!
Photo's are good too!

not sure what you're wanting to do? do you just want a daily driver or show quality car? i personally like to paint all of the engine compartment the same color as the car, and the block too, it makes the shiny stuff pop! looks neater and cleaner IMO i also like to neaten things up under there too so it don't look cluttered, hide solenoids, wiring,  etc . behind panels, down low what ever to make it look clean and simple to show the engine, not all the rats nest of wires and hoses everywhere Cool

There are no short cuts. I cannot see how to make the engine compartment look decent without pulling the engine and doing it right.  Too many nooks and crannies to touch up or polish.

This is Semi-Gloss Black engine paint....

It's been almost 2 years since I did it. I still think it looks good.

30 minute half-assed attempt right before I replaced the hoses, belts and drove it to the Moonshine festival. Quick and dirty, but still looks good. 250 in a '72 Torino wagon.

I have a picture of it. Will post it in a little while.

Are you asking about sprucing it up with everything in place or pulling the engine?

You can always start with hot water, a brush and some Simple Green. Scrub it down as much as you can then use a pressure washer to rinse (hot water unit will dissolve grease pretty quickly.
If you need to repaint, there's no shortcut, you got to pull that baby out and start sanding.

Both of these are rustoleum 7777, satin black.  excellent match, pretty durable and touch ups blend well.

Here are pics of my '69 Cougar.  I taped off the fenders to spray bomb the engine compartment.  Pulled off the air cleaner and valve covers to clean, sand, and paint them.  Everything else was cleaned and painted just as it sat, without removing from the car, using lots of tape and patience.

That's what I'm thinking...with everything in place. It's a good running engine with only 88,000mi

Good way to see what you've got to work with. Just think before you spray with a pressure washer. It will force water into places you don't want. ESPECIALLY avoid the bulkhead connector and alternator.

Sprayed with a can.  The further you got down into the engine compartment, the less new paint was on the block.  From the bottom side, there was no new paint.

Thanks for posting the pic Dave. Todd hid most everything that he could. I plan on doing that to mine this winter.

A LITTLE TRICK I HAVE USED WHEN DOING A "RATTLE-CAN RESTO" IN AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT WITHOUT REMOVING EVERYTHING. I'VE FOUND THAT TRYING TO TAPE AND MASK OFF SOME THINGS IS A BIT OF A CHORE AND VERY TIME CONSUMING. TAPE DOES NOT ALWAYS WANT TO STICK WHERE YOU NEED IT TO AND CAN BE AWKWARD TO CLEANLY APPLY. SOLUTION---TINFOILWink. IT BENDS AND CONFORMS VERY NICELY AND IS MUCH QUICKER THAN WRAPPING AND TAPING THINGS.
BEST WAY OF COURSE, IS TO REMOVE EVERYTHING. BUT IF YOU JUST WANT TO DO A QUICK CLEAN UP GIVE IT A TRY.
