Hi guys,

just wanted to officially drop a picture of my 74' Torino named "The Golden Nugget"LOL it has the 351 Windsor but that's about all I know about it right now. Still waiting to see it in person when I move back from Japan. I have hopes to keep most of it stock but I would like to redo the bench seats to leather and get the top redone just in case of any rust.

76 Elite 400
2.75:1 open 9"😒
1 owner car sold locally 4 days before I was born, August 6, 1976. Have original title. Very very good condition overall. Trying to address the sloppy 70s boat handling, want it lowered ~1.5-2", have a 1-1/8" sway bar coming. Cant find springs yet.... much less headers... I THINK the Sanderson FC4 shorties will fit but cant get 100% confirmation on that. Want 1-7/8" primaries, 3" exhaust with X-pipe for that deep bassy sound.  I want a 3.50:1 traction lok "posi" for my 9"... After suspension and exhaust is sorted then I'll tackle the engine. Not sure if I'm going down to T Meyer pistons or not, but cam and timing is definitely happening. Already have a USA made Weiand 8010 and Edelbrock 1906 AVS2 650cfm carb waiting to go on it. Considering timing gears but not sure. Dont see too many people running them so its a gray area. Its not a muscle car, but I intend to make her look and sound the part of a muscle car. If I can find a 460, I'll drop that in and then do full 400 build outside the car as time permits. Dont want to be down too long. Some extra seat support would be perfect for the 50/50 split... the foam is too soft and is just mush, sadly - despite the interior being near PERFECT.

One thing to do to help handling is to add a sway bar to the rear. A prior owner added one to my '72 wagon. It looks factory, but the factory never put one on a wagon. It's no Miata, but it tracks through highway curves a lot better than I would expect.
1972 Gran Torino station wagon, light blue, 351C 2V, prior owner upgraded to 4V (2V heads), originally had a C4 but prior owner changed to C6 for some reason.

Welcome Jips! The 400 will wake up a bit with the 4bbl intake and carb along with the timing set. To really get it going you need do a cam AND bump the compression. TMI pistons do the trick. Tim is a great guy to work with. My 400 long block was done by Tim with a custom roller cam done to his specs. I am very happy with the end result, made for a great street machine. For headers, Hooker Super Comp long tubes fit, that is what I am running. The Sandersons might fit but I didn't want to take a chance.

For handling, you need spring rate on these cars. The Moog 80090 are a great spring for these cars, but they are no longer made. There are some equivalents available, which are listed in this thread:

  • Husky Spring SC20102
  • Lesjöfors 4127547
  • Mevotech SMS80090

Summit has the Mevotechs and RockAuto has the Lesjofors in stock. Get a set of Addco sway bars, 1 1/8 front, 7/8" rear. Then get some decent performance shocks, like Bilsteins.  Poly bushings and a spring with about 160 - 180 in the rear will tighten up the back end.

Start a project thread on you car.

Sweet ride.  I have a 76 squire wagon that I'm working on.  Hotchkis front suspension, bilstein rear shocks,  lesforges rear springs, spohn rear control arms.  T Meyer pistons and a full motor redo for my 400 being built be my local engine builder in cleveland area including 4bbl swap from the 2bbl with dual plane manifold. Serpentine belt set up to make it pretty.  I'll do a 3.5 rear true trac rear and a trans shift kit for the c6 tranny.  Exhaust is a bear to find but if anyone has advice for long tubes that'd be great.  All new brake and fuel lines and body bushings since the frame is off..  good luck with the build.  I'm pretty deep into mine, feel free to message if you have ?s if I can help you.

The hooker super comps for a 400 Torino are 6125s, but it looks like they are out of production. You might be able to find a used set.

6125s are sadly out of production. I almost ordered a used set privately but Cashapp warned me about the seller before hitting send for the $100. Thank goodness. (Seems scammers are getting better with product pics on fb groups targeting desperate Cleveland/Modified suckers)
Just ordered the Mevotech springs on Summit ~$90 (and a timing chain setup to qualify for free shipping - no reason to throw away $15 on nothing) (thats also why I always check Amazon before ordering from anywhere else.)
So now I just need headers... the search continues

I'll try to see about starting a build thread. I intend to get this car "done" this year. I have the means...

If you want a "deep bassy" exhaust note an H-pipe would be more applicable. The x-pipe has a more 'raspy' tone. No appreciable difference in performance. Also the Flowmaster 40 mufflers have a fairly deep tone. You're not building a Shelby Mustang there.. There's plenty of videos on YT about the difference in X and H mid-pipes.

Yes I stand corrected - H for deeper tone, X for raspy. You are right on that.

Last outside picture for a while.  Rainy season is here. This is my favorite parking spot.  It's at the Crab Shack in Port Ritchie. My car likes it too.
