Hi Nick, have you seen the valve rockers on that 351W yet? If it is stock, then they should be non adjustable bolt down rockers. Many high performance Ford engines in the 60's had adjustable rockers, but very early in the 70's that stopped. Around 1972 you should rarely ever find an OEM Ford engine that doesn't have bolt down rockers.

If that has aftermarket stud rockers(some form of roller), those you can set just like what you learned, except the preload for hydraulic lifters is typically .030-.040" down. Solid lifters would be what you are likely used to in European engines, a simple gap adjustment like .012" I'd throw out.

If the pushrod will compress downward(push it down gently), then the lifters are hydraulic and have to have a preload(valve closed there should be no clearance(negative clearance of say .035")).

So check to see what valvetrain type that 351W has first.

Hi All,
Having been used to working on British engines mainly 4 cylinder petrol's it was really easy to set the valve adjustment using the rule of 9 eg. valve 2 closed adjust valve 7 /valve 7 closed adjust valve 3 working in a set sequence from the shop manual and all that was needed was appropriate spanner / feeler gauge / flat head screwdriver. Now I have a 73 351w is there an easy guide to adjusting the valves on them as I have a couple that are just starting to tap slightly ?

Gap ?
