The issue with the cluster is the speedo cable to the back of the cluster has a retaining clip.

It's easier to pull the dash pad off the top of the dash, to allow more access.

Be gentle with the cluster as due to age, they can get really brittle and fall apart on cars that saw a lot of outdoor exposure.

Chasing electrical can be a headache but sometimes...pulling the entire dash out and inspecting things when you suffer electrical issues can prevent potential fires.

I had an issue like that in 1989 with my ‘76 Gran Torino...... turned out to be a worn wire up in the steering column.

Unplug the 2 wire plug from your radio and then try. I had the same problem and came to find out the ground for my aftermarket radio was plugged into the power wire thats for the lights inside the factory radio and thats what was blowing my fuse

Thanks California Johnny, I will check out the bulbs and track the light blue wire. I took off the face covering and removed the 4 screws holding on the cluster. Evidently that does not allow me to bring the dash cluster forward enough to check anything.  Only could move it forward about an inch or so. Do I have to remove the entire dash to get to the back of the cluster?
Also, wanted to check the light switch out but I thought that you just pull hard enough on the knob to get it off, but it seems awful tight. Don't want to break anything in the process.
Thanks again
Rick

if it blew the fuse immediately i say theres a short somewhere dash lights are a light blue with a red stripe wire... look for any rubbed bare spots also check the small metal lights that light the wiper switch and the heater control areas maybe a bulb is missing and the wire end pushed inwards with no bulb and shorted out???

Very nice car, love the green!
Cars are meant to be driven, not hidden away collecting dust.

Thanks for all the great comments. Still trying to figure out the dash lights. Found the fuse and it was blown. replaced and as soon as I turned on the lights it blew the fuse again. I guess it is either a bare wire or does anyone think it could be the light switch? If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
Drives great and got everything working except under hood light and dash lights. Just can't drive after dark.

Thanks again, Rick

Very nice! One of the colors you don't see too often but definitely is striking in GTS body style.
