C6 needs a 164 tooth 14.23" diameter flex, weight needs to match the engine, and both the flex and the converter need to have a compatible stud pattern. when the time comes mock everything up before trying to assemble it in the car. check the crank pilot diameter compared to the converter pilot, fit the converter to the flex on the engine checking for drain plug clearance if needed. if the flex doesn't have a hole for the drain plug you can drill it. if you get that far, as always the converter needs to be loose in the flex stud holes with the engine and trans mated, no pulling the trans with the bolts!

due to the 50oz requirement Summit singles it down to this one,

there may be others that will interchange but for whatever reasons the Summit page doesn't have enough info to tell, call TCI and ask if they cover the application i think they might. don't forget the 164 tooth block plate and proper size converter nuts, some aftermarket converters use oversize studs ;)

any reason you'd rather use the c6 over a c4? you lose about 50-60 hp usin the c6. to use the c6 you need the proper 50 oz flexplate. They had c6's behind the 82 and newer 50 oz balnced 302's. I had one in a 82 f150 and it was a total SLUG, think the motor started out with around 120 hp, had a c6 and then a 9" rear in it, was lucky to have 50 hp to the wheels i bet lol

i'd at least go to a hydraulic AOD and get the overdrive

whatever trans you get make sure it's a V8 version, they're beefier inside than the 6 cyl units

if you want a OD trans, get one from a 98-2002ish v6 mustang (2002-ish is when they switched from cable speedo output to electric, so if you want to keep your cable speedo you need one from before the change), much stronger then a aod but you will need to wire up soem switches or buy a controller for the lock up and other electronic functions. the v6 torque converter does stall a bit higher then the v8 models which is a added bouns and guys have run these junkyard v6 trannies up to 500+ hp with no problems.

as far as what c4 and flexplate, just need to make sure the flexplate is for the 82 and up 50 oz balance 302 and you also have to watch the tooth count on it and make sure it all matches up. they have 157, 164 and I think they made a smaller one back in the 70's for pintos and mustang 11's but i'd look for a c4 from about the late 70's to early 80's era.

my AOD has no electronics i pulled it from a 83 E150 van. it had wrecking yard writing on it saying it came from a 84 cougar so right in that era should be the same, almost a direct bolt in Wink (swapping from a FMX)

Find a 4R70W from an F150 (2002ish) with the 4.2. It has all the V8 internals, with a 302-pattern on the bellhousing and a torque convertor that bolts up to a FMX/AOD smallblock flexplate. Stall speed is good for our cars as the weight is close and HP/Torque from the 4,2 are in the ballpark with a smallblock.
You will need an aftermarket controller.
MUCH sturdier than the V6 mustang unit.

from what I have "read", the v6 mustang and v6 truck are the same trans internally, maybe even externally but I'd imagine the truck has a longer tail on it. the v6 torque converters stall should be a bit higher behind a v8, so perfect for a mildly cammed v8.

the hydraulic AOD can be upgraded, starts life at the strength level of the FMX so it should handle a 5.0 no problem unless outright abused ...

sure they can be upgraded but from the impression i got, the OP is lookin to just drop a good used trans in and go with it. thats why i suggested the 4r70w route.

hmm interesting... never heard of that before!  clutch swapped for the torque converterShocked idk any of them are decent if you build themWink but as far as the c-4 vs c-6 thing i've never blown a c-6, grenaded plenty of weak c-4's JMO as far as th400's they do have heavier clutches and steels but a built th350 or built th700R works better than a 400 IMO matter of fact i'm having my buddy build a 700r for my truck one of these days

are there a lot of small pattern bell 4R70W cases around? IIRC there were some produced for 1 model year or less affectionately called B@$+@RDs.
a stock hydraulic AOD would also stand up to a 5.0 no problem .... but a good used transmission?
that usually turns out being an oxymoron

--------------------------------

Johnny the clutched autos have been around since <1970, where was ya?

--------------------------------

so they are or are not going to bring back the Clutch-6 ?

i'd be interested, and it would give a purpose for all those Censored  large pattern bell cases LOL

3.8/4.2 V6 use small block bellhousings. F150 with the 4.2 has the heavier duty clutch packs like the V8 units.
There were some early 4.6 engines produced with small block patterns, used in 92-93ish Panther chassis IIRC, but 4R70W was not around yet.

i lost touch with the transmission world just before that time period, i did a little R&Ring prior then went on to other things.

i know i wouldn't sleep well with V6 internals

the clutch autos were popular back before the lencos were invented & came from the org auto clutch transmissions
i knew a guy here that even tried/used the 727 clutchflite version in a tow truck, after trying it for a few mo his complaint was the high gearing and hard shifting.
from the 3 versions clutch flite, clutch hydro, clutch C6, the C6 case/guts were superior in design for this clutch mod over the Turdo400 & torqueboom

Fords C6 trans could and was handling 1500HP back in 1969...

very few guys know anything about these old auto clutches today so Winters decided not to make new versions of them.Cry
