Hi guys,
This coming Sat. I'm going to be looking at a '71 500 2dr. (non vinyl) formal roof car. I was hoping the brain trust here could give me some insight as to where these cars normally have rust issues. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!Smile

similar platform to the Mustangs, and Cougars of the time.
Look at the floorboards, rear wheel openings, bottoms of the rear quarter panels, and rear frame rails at the rear spring mounts.

ghosttrain2, Thanks so much for the info.Smile The guy claims it's a solid car, floors, trunk, etc. but obviously,  I'll know a lot more when I see it in person.

True. Nothing like looking at it in person. My '72 came from the original owner and he was positive that the car had only 2 small areas of rust the size of a quarter. You figure someone that has owned a car for 40 years (since new) would know, right? Wrong. That same 40 year ownership causes memory lapse, and seeing something every day will cause issues to become "invisible", as you get so used to them that ignoring them becomes the norm. Found that out the hard way!

Carry a magnet wrapped in a thin cloth (to avoid scratches), flashlights, floor jack, and a notepad for notes. These will be worth their weight in gold!

unlovedford, Thanks for the great ideas!Thumbs Up I already have a "cheat sheet" of sorts started to jog my memory, not only for body, but other areas as well,  The magnet, floor jack, and flashlights will definitely be included as well as a knowledgeable friends(s) to help inspect and keep me from getting too emotional, and impulsive,LOL! I might be in my 50s but I still get exited, especially about cars! The owner is also in his 50s, so I hope his age proves to be a positive.

2 huge areas of concern are the front torque boxes and the cowl. If either has holes call it a day and go home. If you can look under the dash at where the "hats" bolt to the cowl you can see if it's rotted out.
