Looking at a set of 6124-1HKR headers for a 73 GTS..just want to check if anyone knows whether these will fit as they state 75-79...would think that 73 would be the same as 75 in the places that matter for headers? Have sourced a half price set but still pretty spendy so just want to be sure before purchasing
Engine will be a Ford Racing M-6007-Z2427-FFT (351w based) with a TKX gearbox (hydraulic clutch) Will be running hydroboost and Borgeson SPA-T Saginaw steering box Any info would be appreciated... thanks...Greg |

I used them on my 1976. 351W With a/c. They do fit and my slightly modified Windsor really likes them.

1973 Gran Torino 351W:
Installed JBA #1653S. No problems - plenty of room.

Note: With the JBA 1653S Shorty Headers, I installed the JBA 1653SH mid-pipe with H pipe. All fit well in a 1973 Gran Torino with a 351W.

did you have issues with the oil pan due to the motor being 3/8” lower from the crites mounts?

On the Hookers, the passengers side was really tight. To make it easier, I replaced my motor mounts. There were no clearance issues. I have the engine out.....again.....! Different issue. I'll definitely pay closer attention when I put it back together.

I used NAPA 1976 Gran Torino 351W motor mounts. They were back ordered for a while. Nice fit and went together easy

Compton, what did you end up doing on your headers?
And was the Windsor based Ford Motorsports engine set up with Windsor style heads or Cleveland type heads? I can’t recall and got curious what engine # you went with.

These cars have plenty of room around the engine/trans for headers, the bigger issue might be how low the collectors hang. I'm going to buy the Hooker headers that fit the Cleveland, and are detailed as for a 71 Torino etc. I like that they come in versions painted or coated. For $300 I will fit them and cut off the collector flange, and weld on a V-band flange(I hate the flat bolt flanges, they leak after any bump you hit). For that 427, what heads are on it? I hope it has high flow heads, it needs a good 325cfm or more(@.500 and .600"). There's a member of the Corral with a 88 Cougar with a 427 in it. He had a KB blown 302 for ages and moved to the big NA SBF. He ended up choosing an EFI system with traction control, and that solved his tire spinning issues. You might consider that possible need before selecting an EFI system, if you don't use a carb.

Tasty choice!! The real problem will be keeping the local law enforcement on your good side and not being read the riot act

Problem is, the 72+ has the steering box arrangement that differs from what I know of the unibody stuff.
The main headaches are for the 72-79 full frame cars:
FPA makes the correct headers for our cars. I've heard they have the fixtures and actually make the Hooker 4 speed headers as well. Long time rumor, never been able to confirm that or not, but something that goes back to the old torino Yahoo and MSN forum days (Severely dating myself here). I had to modify my old Dynomax blackjack headers for my 351c 2V, and frankly...these $99 headers were bought 25+ years ago, and I am astounded they are still as solid as they are after 50K+ miles on them. I got two pairs of flowtech headers in 2020, as they came with an engine and transmission I took in trade. Never test fit them however, considering they state 1970-1974, I am hoping no issues with fitment but I know if I elect to use on my manual transmission applicatiion, I will have to cut and modify a couple tubes.

I still have a new set of Headman 2V headers I got in 1989, when the plan was a 351C-2V build. Back then headers were painted, only rare high end stuff might be chromed or SS. Then too $100 was not bad for a common header part number. Things have changed.

does anyone who installed long pipe headers have factory AC? If so, were there any issues installing them or does the AC stuff get in the way? Im debating taking my AC out and putting on a new intake manifold with 4bbl carb. Currently running stock 460cid 6.6L windsor motor with 2bbl carb, factory air, all original. Id like to get more power and eliminate some of the vacuum lines somehow.

Yep. I got mine about 4 years ago. At the time, they were very slow. He said he could not get anybody to help. They are a work of art.

It is a 73 GTS with a 71 351C 4V and 5 speed TKO. It's been about 4 years ago, but he was a real nice guy to work with and he makes his stuff to fit our cars.

Hello, hopefully someone can help me out...I am dropping a 351W crate engine in a '68 torino gt fastback. It's a C-4 column shift with PS and manual brakes. I'm looking for headers that would fit, long or short. Thanks for your help! Bob
