Hey there, so obviously im new to this forum, and new to Fords in general,
im 20 years old, attending collage to become an auto mechanic, im a 5 year apprentice and completed 2 out of 3 years ti'll i go for my mechanics license. I own and work on my 73 vette coupe, a 70 olds cutlass s a 69 dodge charger R/T and a 65 buick lesbre I'm hoping to add a torino to my junk collection Specifically a 70 or 71 fastback With that said im looking for information on these cars, and i assume i came to the right place (Fingers crossed) i've seen 2 roofs for these fords and there mercury brethren, with different quarter glass i was told one is simply called a Fastback, And the other a 500 or "Brougham"? Also after i learn a bit about them, im obviously looking to buy one... but not a good one (wheres the fun in that?) im looking for a shell, no glass no interior, no front clip no trunk lid... but it would be nice to have doors to be honest. it would be nice to get a roller on junk suspension, but preferably no engine or trans. if these pictures work this is my charger before and current state, has a big block a viper 6 speed but yeah im going for a mad max vibe with this and the torino (Think american v8 interceptor) http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=100171.0;attach=194642;image http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=100171.0;attach=225751;image |

Thanks! And nice vette, just for the sake of speading the word, have you heard of "corvetteimage's" chrome bumper conversion for 74-82 vettes? its a new rear bumper that transforms the car to look more like a 68-73!
Anyway Back to torinos im looking for one, but i dont know what prices to expect, i dont know how rare these cars are and more importantly what chassis are they based on, i was told they have alot in common with a similar year mustang, but how much truth is there in that? How easy is it to find parts, new or used. also its the entire rear 1/3 (from the doors back) different on a Fastback, than on a 500? Did mercury make asthing with the fastback roofline? i found a really solid, fairly complete 70 500 version for 600$ its nice and close to home so its tempting, but do i still have a chance of finding a Fastback? Thanks! |

Welcome, ...
edit; I missed the 70-71 detail of what you are hunting. All I know about those is that they are unibody as John says, and share some things with Mustangs. Edited by 72 RS 351 - 26-October-2014 at 8:07AM |

All the 70-71 2 door torinos are a fastback design, but the sportsroof models are even flatter and have a spoiler built into the trunk lid and quarter extensions. It looks like the cars are completely different behind the doors.

allen, no i haven't heard of that vette chrome bumper kit, my vette is done, but i'll check it out! pm me the web site or post their link. i'm not that familiar with the 70-71's but i do know they are unibody cars ,so check the under side good for rust and weak spots. i'd definitely go for the fastback

http://customimagecorvettes.com/product/1974-1982-rear-bolt-on-chrome-bumper-conversion-cover/ ^ thats the link to vette bumper johnny So, anyone know the production numbers for the "sportsroof" models? What about pricing? what do junkers typically go for? are they high dollar collectables? or unsung heros? |

I went hunting for a torino old school style today, i hit up a local junkyard and found 2, a hardtop and a fastback, and got a first hand look at the differences.....
Also was heartbroken at their condition This one is by far in the best shape.. but not a fastback :( |

Welcome to the forum and welcome to Ford family. You are in the right place. I'm 24 and have had my 72 Torino since I was 19. I truly love it.
I'd say under $1000 would be a good price for a solid 70-71 rust free roller shell with minimal interior before all the paperwork and transportation. They are rare cars but they are out there and have very slick styling for sure. How wild are you planning to go with it? What are your expectations for the car? I see a cage in the charger and the Viper T56 is no joke. The 70-71 Torinos are unibody, rear leaf spring cars. They have pretty weak brakes and suspension from the factory by today's standards, mainly because tires have changed so much. I don't know if any parts are interchangeable from the same generation mustang platform but Ford usually did that for mass production so it wouldn't be a surprise. Regardless, I wouldn't mind having one someday too. Edited by Billy C - 27-October-2014 at 9:21AM |

Thanks Billy,
Ever seen Mad max 2 the road warrior? Yeah well my goal is to find a fastback torino, hack on a 71-73 mustang front clip, cut out the rear an put a scratch tail panel and use a 68-70 charger rear bumper, might get some authentic XB Falcon taillights from a friend in australia, but im sure i could find an american alternative. basically.. i don't need a nice car to start with, everythings going to get cut, and more importantly, Everything will be rough, rusty and dented honestly, if that green fastback pictured was on my driveway, i would be very happy with that as a starting point, but that things sat there since '75 and the engines still in it, if i move it, it might fold up on itself.. but ill see.. Or just have your friend crate up an entire XB and send it over here . You'd be the king of bad-ass!!!!! But I guess you couldn't push it to 11 and chance crunching it then because it would be too rare.

Already requested that :D... Unfortunately they only ever made about 100000, and ONLY about 24000 were coupes, the rest for 4 doors, wagons, and pick up trucks. |

Thanks!, That green one is only 30 minutes away from me, i love it, its perfect for what im doing, i'm just puzzled at how to get to it, theres about 200 tons of cars surrounding it, and again, i think it might snap if i attempt to move it.. still i haven't given up on it.

I know, but im not concerned, my plan is to stick it on a truck frame, so original rails are not important.
