Subject: Tilt Wheel Starting Issue

Hi everyone! Looking for thoughts on this issue, please. '76 with tilt & as the years have been passing, when I try to start the car with the steering wheel 'up', it won't turn over (loss of power), but if I lower the wheel & try, it starts no problem!

I seem to be the only one that has this problem, as I've taken it in to a couple of shops (tires, etc.) & didn't mention this issue & no one mentioned that they had a problem starting it. Watched a few DIY vids, but this problem wasn't mentioned.

There could be at least a couple of issues to investigate: 1) A pinched wire within the steering column or a wire that has had it's outer insulation compromised and is touching metal or a wire that is internally broken with it's outer insulation fully intact. 2) The actuation rod from key tumbler/switch to ignition switch is a bit out of adjustment.

Thanks. I recently changed the turn signal switch, but this was happening before that. What other wire(s) would possibly be pinched/exposed? Will have to get back in there & check it out unfortunately.

 turn signal wires are the only ones running down the column! the ignition switch is mounted near the bottom of the column... maybe the actuator rod causing the switch contacts to move slightly??? if so try adjusting the switch a little...

From what you described, I believe the culprit is the actuator rod/ignition switch and not the turn signal wiring. A '76 column "should" have it's ignition switch mounted on the top side of the column under the gauge cluster. If you do have to go through the process of getting to the ignition switch(removing gauge cluster), I would suggest installing a new or NOS switch "just because" of it's age and it's cycled usage over the last 46+years. Hope this helps

Thanks for your input. I do believe that it's not a wiring issue, but the actuator rod requiring some type of re-alignment or as you suggested, a new ignition switch.

 there are 2 nuts holding the switch onto the column the switch is slotted so you can slid it either way a little worth a try firstWink also check that the bolts arent loose in the tilting section!!! is there any movement up and down when its in a position??? that could effect the rod....

Thanks again! Will be looking at this on the weekend & 'no', no movement of the wheel in any position.
