While my rear end is up in the air (LOL, but seriously...), I was tempted to look at my wheel bearings. However, the Ford manual makes this look like a scary proposition (pull the axle, support in a special jig, chisel off the retaining ring, press off the bearing, etc.). Is there a way to re-grease the bearings by just partially pulling the axle shaft? I don't have a big press or any fancy tools like the manual calls for to deal with bearings!

Rear wheel bearings.. Does the rear axle make noise at all, rolling and in turns?

The car's always made a low "chugging" or "woofing" sound as it rolls, and that disappears at speed (more likely it just blurs into road noise). I'm assuming that's the bearings.

When I spin the axle without the wheels on, and unloaded (in the air), it makes some shuddery, clunky noises, but I don't think that's a fair test.

Now that my daily driver is starting to make the same noises, I'm back to this question: is there a way to re-grease the wheel bearings without a lot of fancy tools/disassembly? If I just pull the wheel stud mounting disc off, will that grant me enough access to the bearings to re-grease them?

Rear bearings are sealed. Gotta change them if they are bad or making noise.

I had a 75 Nova years ago that made the same noise. I refered to it as the Heartbeat of America. I was my retort to all of my GM oriented cohorts who wouldn't let it go that I was driving a Nova.
